So often, in troubled sleep, he has recurred
To trouble waking. See: gentle he looks,
The burdened patriarch I had thought immured
In tombs, in illustrated storybooks.

He has survived the vision I now see,
With time's regard, as impotent, absurd…
A figure wrenched from a lost allegory,
