In John the Pisan's statue at Siena
Of the wolf suckling Romulus and Remus,
In the anxious eyes and searching nose - the low
Thrust of her gaunt head from the prominent spine,

I see my own dog: she, though sweetly pampered,
Looked drained and scrawny when, still half a puppy,
With bleeding teats, she bowed beneath her instinct
