Having a Drink Miles Champion
What surprises the most is the exceptional good grace and humour with which Michael continues to do everything he does – a remarkable feat, given the particular world he has chosen, and made, for himself. Equally rare is his respect for those whose tastes and enthusiasms are contiguous to that world. To single out one generous act from many: early in 1994 he asked me to review Eternal Sections by Tom Raworth, knowing I would welcome the opportunity to express my admiration for the book. I sent the review to Tom – not without a good deal of nervousness – and our friendship began. Happily, my friendship with Michael continues, some thirty years later. Besos y un gran abrazo, Michael! Come visit us in Brooklyn! Forgive this bauble, if you can!
