Three Poems

AFTER CHRISTMAS

This frosted morning with fog lifting
Things seem in balance - slowed and held
In crystalline arrest.

The trees stationed in mist,
A row of gulls hesitant on goalposts,
Church bells even,
Men's future, which at times it seems
ten minutes' thought could take you right through:

The lost and the not yet found
In balance - unless
It is all a trick of dawn,
Of the sun's lowness, of the length of shadows on the
frozen ground.
