Lily, in her crumpled fur-trimmed coat and hat
decorated as if with fancy icing,
beams with ingenuous goodness; meanwhile Jack,
in military cap and greatcoat, smiles wryly,
with deep-set eyes, broad nose and semaphore ears.
He looks like me. We meet, after ninety years.

The last day of October 1919:
Waterloo Station: not feeling excited,
sort of feeling all upside-down. Quite a crowd
to see us off. In the train to Southampton,
a dear little Scotch boy who’d been to visit
his granny in Scotland and was very pleased
