the train arrives like a poem
with snow from Berlin
leaves from Manhattan

and in a darker version
twigs from the Feng trees of Shanghai
on its sooty roof

once Leonard appears
the platform becomes

both a place by the river
and a table of mercy

he doesn’t make them angels
he doesn’t make them lonely
