TRACT

Gleaming like the hide
of a savage beast
a man's
tall silk hat
sits on his narrow skull
a woman leans on his arm
round them the coalyards
and the piles of sand
stock the bloodless tract
that is their life
but a schoolboy studies
algebra and geometry
in a neutral
pure white room.
