Coronation

One Christmas morning
I heard myself sing
to a steaming kitchen
‘I’m as happy as a king

belie-eve-mee’,
things going to pot
and everyone doing
the turkey trot.

As happy as Henry
and his court of beeves,
basting his fat
for My Lady Greensleeves,

as the snow-starred baby
in his candled stall,
they say is King
and Lord of all,

as George the Sixth
