I

Gone the asphalt soldier
From sand, steppe and polder,
The camps razed or left
Consecrated to death,
The culture shattered
Its thinkers scattered
And banners changed to smoke
From stoves warming the Volk.

The feral enterprise put down
What remain are nouns, strewn
Across the core of Western thought
Like salt over a barren plot;
