Alarm

Defoliant heat, rough
going, wild cherry is the first
to give way – matt yellow
leaves with rust
red tones          (I saw the figure
5 in gold) in early August,
on the ground, new growth
vertical, entirely bare /
think radio masts, the
trunks unscathed however…
Silence: an acoustic signature
of thirst you didn’t hear
or maybe a bravado
                      show of calm
