Getting Carter

That men have no souls occurred
to Mike Hodges, who begat
Carter who caught
a train north

for revenge
and found a girl
unsouled. That year, knitting, purl
one, plain one, I took a train,

ignored my waters breaking.
So I dropped a soul into
the world too soon,
dropping like

vest, needles
on the track. Though
hidden variables show
